To say it was an historic season for the Texas Southern men’s basketball team would be an understatement. The Tigers set the school record for wins in a season (25) and went on their longest postseason tournament run since joining the NCAA in 1978. Tuesday’s overtime loss at Wisconsin-Green Bay (87-86 in overtime) in the semi-finals of the CollegeInsider.tournament was almost the latest road conquest for the Tigers, who led the NCAA in road games played.
TSU opened the season with a stunning road victory over Baylor, which finished the season in the NCAA tournament. Two other victories against Power 5 Conference schools (Oregon – another NCAA tournament team, and Texas A&M) highlighted the non-conference schedule. Then, during SWAC play, the Tigers won 11 consecutive games, which was one of the longest win streaks in the nation at the time. TSU advanced to the SWAC tournament finals before falling to PVAMU in a close finish. After receiving a bid to play in the CollegeInsider.com tournament, the Tigers became road warriors, defeating New Orleans, UT Rio Grande Valley and Louisiana-Monroe (in triple overtime) before this week’s defeat.
The Tigers recorded a number of “firsts” this season, including their first-ever game played in the month of April – a testament to a strong season filled with memorable moments.
Congratulations go to first-year Tiger head coach Johnny Jones and the entire basketball program on an incredible season.
