Texas Southern University Celebrates First Generation College Students

Today, first-generation college students at Texas Southern University will be celebrated for their contributions to our campus community. November 8 is recognized as National First Generation College Student Day by the Center for First-Generation Student Success. This is the first time the university is participating in this event. Students will have the opportunity to visit Student Services offices around campus and receive gifts of appreciation.

In 2017, the inaugural First –Generation College Celebration was launched by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the Center for First-generation Student Success. Due to the event’s success, the partnership between CFGSS has made this an annual event. This date is used to encourage campus communities to better understand the systemic barriers plaguing higher education and the supports necessary for this population of students to thrive.

According to the Center for First-generation Student Success’ website, “November 8 was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965.” The Higher Education Act (“HEA”) is a product of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and was intended to help level a playing field that had been weighed against Americans from minority and low-income backgrounds. It created federal grants and loan programs to help students finance their education and ushered programs like the Federal TRIO programs, necessary for postsecondary access, retention, and completion for low-income, potential first-generation college graduates.

Texas Southern first-generation students can stop by the following offices between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to receive a token of appreciation:

  • Vice President of Student Services (Recreation Center – 1st Floor Lobby)
  • Student Life (Sterling Student Life Center- 218)
  • Veterans Services (Fairchild Building)
  • TRIO SSS/Talent Search (Fairchild Building)
  • Upward Bound (Bell Building)
  • University Child Care Center (Lobby)
  • Debate Team (Education Building)
  • Career & Professional Development (Bell Building)
  • University Health Center (Lobby)
