J’neise Hodge, a junior music education major at Texas Southern University, has been selected to participate in the HBCU Virtual Concert Choir presented during National HBCU Week 2020 sponsored by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Hodge, a member of the 105 Voices of History HBCU National Concert Choir, will join students from HBCUs across the nation to deliver “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The song will be broadcast in a pre-recorded video and is arranged by Roland Carter.

The Concert Choir’s performance will be September 23 at 10 a.m. CDT for the White House Initiative event. The national performance will be broadcast at 7 p.m. CDT. View the video here.

Hodge was informed about the opportunity to audition by Dr. Kiana Day Williams, assistant professor of music and choir director at TSU. Hodge, who is from Richmond, Texas, went through two rounds of video submissions this summer before being notified of being selected for the Concert Choir. She said her participation gives her a chance to share her voice on a national stage.

“I was surprised, and I was very grateful because it is a great opportunity to have as a music major,” Hodges said. “It is something I can use on an application if I want to become a teacher or (in) anything dealing with music.”

Dr. Needha Boutte-Queen, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences, said the programming at TSU provides students many opportunities to build upon their talents and showcase them through academic, visual, and performance venues locally and nationally.

“As Dean, I am keenly aware and proud of the many talents COLABS students possess and having Miss Hodge represent both the College and our great institution in this capacity reinforces that pride one-thousand fold,” said Boutte-Queen.
