TSU to Host Events During Houston Money Week

Posted on Monday, March 29, 2021

Texas Southern University's Jesse H. Jones School of Business and the Department of Default Prevention will host sessions during Houston Money Week, April 5 - 6, 2021. This year's theme is "Health and Wealth in a Pandemic," and the organizers want to help students and community members cope with financial stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. The community-wide initiative was created to empower families and individuals with financial education. During this week, financial agencies across the city of Houston will host financial literacy sessions at no cost.

The month of April is National Financial Literacy Month, and Dr. Kamala Raghavan, coordinator of the Houston Money Week sessions at TSU, wants to reach students from across campus. For two days, they will host virtual sessions and bring in speakers to talk to students about financial topics that will benefit them. "This life skill of financial literacy will help our students, and they absolutely need to know how to go forward and be successful while managing their financial health and wealth," said Raghavan. "I'm hoping they will take this and move forward as they go into their careers and futures."

From 11 a.m. – noon, April 5th, Dischunara Brown from Default Prevention Services in the Office of Student Financial Assistance will host a session on iGRAD, the financial literacy platform that assists students who desire to build a financial planning profile. The event will welcome back the Founder and President of the Society for Financial Education & Professional Development, Inc., Theodore R. Daniels, to speak about financial literacy.

The following day, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., April 6th, will include a session geared toward insurance and taxes. Dr. Ramesh Cherivirala, a financial advisor from New York Life Insurance Company, will speak about insurance products and needs. Later in the session, Professor Carlton Perkins from the Jesse H. Jones School of Business will speak about personal taxes and income tax planning.

One of the event's goals is to create financially sound individuals, who can be a pillar in the community. "These events are to promote a life skill, to change a mindset and create a foundation for financial awareness," said Brown. "Knowledge is key. Hopefully, they will be able to take something from the sessions and take it back home and create new practices with their own families." To register for TSU's Houston Money Week, click here.
