TSU Graduate Spotlight: Tynesha Dever

Tynesha Dever, B.S. Administration of Justice

A Journey Rooted in 5th Ward and Yates High: Hailing from the vibrant communities of 5th Ward and South Park in Houston, TX, Tynesha is a proud graduate of Jack Yates High School. Her journey is a testament to the strength that emanates from one's roots. Her mantra, "delayed but not denied," echoes the challenges she faced and overcame with unwavering resolve.

A Mother, A Scholar, A Trailblazer: With a 9-year-old daughter by her side, Tynesha pursued her Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice. As one of 10 siblings, she proudly stands as the first of her mother’s children to graduate from college, breaking barriers and setting an inspiring example for her family and community.

TSU: More Than an Alma Mater: Choosing Texas Southern University was a natural decision for Tynesha, continuing her education just across the street from her beloved alma mater, Jack Yates High School. The atmosphere and culture of TSU became a cherished memory, shaping her academic journey and providing a supportive backdrop to her perseverance.

Perseverance in Pursuit of Dreams: Tynesha's most significant source of pride is her perseverance. To achieve her goal of graduating this year, she attended summer sessions and doubled up on classes, overcoming hurdles with determination and dedication.

Law Enforcement Aspiration: With a passion for making a positive impact, Tynesha aspires to join law enforcement, specifically focusing on helping the youth in her community. Learning about the school to prison pipeline during her studies inspired her to focus on youth deferment and prevention services. Inspired by her exposure to forensic science at TSU, she eagerly anticipates contributing to solving cold cases.

Impacting the Community Through Internships and Service: Tynesha's academic journey includes an impactful internship at Precinct 7, where she worked under Pamela Greenwood and Sergeant Bilbo, the same sergeant who oversaw homecoming at TSU this semester. From crime scene photos to ride alongs and the implementation of diversion programs, she gained a holistic understanding of law enforcement through shadowing.

Message to Younger Tynesha: "You did it! I'm proud and happy you stuck with it. This is my time, and I am proud to be here. Be confident, nobody can take this degree away from you, you earned it.”

Inspiring 5th Ward, South Park, 3rd Ward, and Beyond: Tynesha's ambitions extend beyond personal achievements; she aims to inspire and encourage those from 5th Ward, South Park, 3rd Ward, and beyond to achieve and dream big.
