TSU Theater pays tribute to the Blues Feb. 26-27

On February 26-27, 2016, Texas Southern University will pay tribute to the Blues with two performances of the stage play Johnnie B. Goode. Written and directed by Thomas Meloncon, TSU’s Theatre Coordinator.  Johnnie B. Goode intertwines both facts and fiction from the evolution of this musical art form to pay homage to the great African American musicians whose music has influenced everything from Rock and Roll to Rhythm and Blues to Jazz.

“That was some powerful music,” Meloncon says. “Many black Blues singers were exploited by record companies who gave them little or nothing for their music.

Set in 1950’s Port Arthur, TX, Johnnie B. Good tackles the musical generational gap as the old single guitar and foot stomping Blues give way to Rhythm and Blues with the addition of drums, horns, pianos and guitars.

Presented by TSU Theater and The Office of University Advancement, Johnnie B. Goode will be held in the Sawyer Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. February 26th and at 2:00pm on February 27th. Tickets are $15. For more information, call Kendrick Callis at 713-313-7933.
