Four-day summer work week is proposed

TSU’s administration is proposing a four-day work week during the summer session to consolidate University resources and save money. An electronic survey went live on March 7 to gather feedback from the campus community.

The proposed schedule change will result in savings to the University of $12,987.58 per day for a total of $467,552.23 during the summer semester. The proposed work week for most staff will be Tuesday through Friday with the day starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break.

Schedule change, if implemented, will maximize the use of campus buildings and increase utilization of the classrooms and labs in instructional buildings. Proposed cost savings will include an electrical load reduction of 79 hours, and reduced water usage and natural gas consumption of $9,990.45 per day for a total of $359,655.37. The shortened week will decrease water demand at the Sterling Student Life Center cafeteria and food services area. This reduction equals $1,164.48 per day for a total of $41,921.28. Contractors can perform University maintenance and repairs associated with the three-year capital plan at the normal daily rate on Mondays instead of the premium labor rate charged on weekends. 

Consolidation of designated instructional buildings from seventeen (17) to four (4) will provide 70 classrooms for use and result in savings of $2,997.13 per day for a total of $107,896.86. Centralizing classroom space will reduce the University’s utility load on the University and reduce the distance students will travel between classes. The following buildings have been recommended as designated instructional space for all summer sessions: Science (Bldg. 165), MLK (Bldg. 143), Education (Bldg. 149) and Business (Bldg. 150).
