Posted on Thursday, October 26, 2017

Texas Southern University’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business (JHJ) will host its 25th annual Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference (SWBATC) on October 26-27, 2017. This year’s theme is: "Informatics: Role of Information Systems Technology in Higher Education for Business Disciplines and Beyond". SWBATC will be held in JHJ Rooms 238, 239 and 242 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. each day. An evening reception will be held in the Student Center President’s Lounge at 6:00 p.m., October 26.

SWBATC will explore the application of informatics in several disciplines including business, science, technology, healthcare administration, public affairs and administration, entertainment and sport management. Informatics is the study and practice of creating, storing, finding, manipulating and sharing information. This teaching conference will focus on the implications of information systems and technology in higher education and how we teach to develop student learning for skill sets employers seek for the various disciplines.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Brad Jensen, executive manager, Accenture, Inc.,  presenting on "Informatics: The Gulf Between Skills Preparation and Industry Requirements;  Andrew Moore, chief operating officer, IronEdge, Inc., presenting on “The Democratization of BI: Why BI is the New Email” and “Tools, Training and Processes for the Overworked and Understaffed”; Dr. Janet L. Bailey, emeritus professor, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, presenting on “Microsoft Analytics Technologies including Azure and Power BI/Accessing Free Technologies and Support Materials for Learning Processes”; and Sonny Childs, business intelligence specialist, presenting on “Working with Data to Create Visualizations”. Additional speakers and presentations will be added over the two-day conference.

“We are honored that so many brilliant speakers have chosen to share their wisdom on the importance of information technology to help us improve our ability to teach students utilizing technology in the classroom, said Mayur Desai, SWBATC chair and JHJ management information systems professor. “We have no choice but to embrace the new information technology and tools that younger generations are using to receive what we want them to learn.”
