Veterans and servicemembers on TSU’s campus now have a space to call their own.
“I’m a servicemember of 9 years and I’m currently going through ROTC right now to get my commission in May 2024,” said Kenneth Richardson II.
Kenneth Richardson II is one of 191 veterans currently attending Texas Southern University. On this Veterans Day, the Division of Enrollment and Student Success hosted a program that included a ribbon cutting for the new Veterans Lounge inside the Fairchild Building.
“Th reason this space was created for VA students is because they deserve a space,” said Arlen Sims, Executive Director of Strategic Enrollment and Student Success Initiatives. “All of our other students have spaces on campus that they can call their own and we wanted to make sure this space was one for them that they can come in, do homework, relax amongst one another, have that camaraderie.”
These veteran and servicemember scholars have access to computers, printers, a copying machine, refrigerator, microwave, coffee, and tv for free. Additionally, a social worker intern will be housed inside to assist with any mental health support or other additional resources they may need.
“It’s a shared space and mindset and lifestyle,” Richardson said. “It’s experiences that we go through in this branch, or whatever branch you’re in, that kind of set you apart from civilians. So, to have this area away from, I guess, the general population, it gives you more of a safe space because some people have not seen and experienced the things that some servicemembers have experienced.”
One way to show the university’s commitment to the men and women who have made the ultimate commitment to our nation.
